Traditional Virian gypsy Kereen Donnelly joined the Order of Scherza to train as a priestess because she wanted to escape various family obligations. She found herself unsuited to Temple life. The Carpathian/Vyrdigaan alliance recruited her as one of their agents and she embarked on a career path which she enjoys. She has good survival skills and is an expert martial arts practitioner. She met fellow gypsy Degmard Verkhauten while carrying out a mission. The two got on well together and ended up marrying.

He keeps to the old ways, travelling around the countryside in his campervan, stopping at campsites. He takes on temporary casual work to pay for his lifestyle. He has a gruff, no-nonsense manner. He is wary and suspicious of settled folk and doesn't mix well with them. He became friends with Darien and Levene Shanahan after they helped Mary through a troubled time. He was widowed and travelled alone for many years, until he met and married fellow gypsy Kereen Donnelly.
